In a world where most people don't do anything daily or even regularly, these individuals prove the exception by focusing on continuity in their chosen endeavors.

This is the greatest benefit of continuity that nobody talks about. Somov explains it compellingly in his book about quitting smoking. Each habit has its own behavioral orbit, with its own pull and gravity and vicious cycle of stop and go attempts to quit. Continuity is what solidifies your foundation that helps you navigate the orbit of habit. If you can make that your number one goal, it becomes the force multiplier that moves you forward and makes all the other goals you have to deal with easier. None of this, as you can tell, is glamorous. All healthy habits are boring and repetitive and rarely rewarded by society. And although discipline may produce a harvest of peace for those who have been trained by it, sometimes we can't reap those crops until next season.

One of the mantras that's guided me as a writer for over twenty years is, small times long equals big. It's my personal equation for creative prolificacy, but it's also a highly useful approach for any kind of habit, personal or professional. You have to think of it as a streak, which is something wearing my nametag for the past eight thousand consecutive days has taught me. Each time a streak is started and maintained, you get a little dopamine reward in your brain. The higher your streak number gets, the more valuable it becomes, the greater your dopamine reward, and the greater your incentive is not to break the chain. The streak is in itself a momentum intensifier.

Whatever habit you're trying to start or sustain, figure out how to plug it into the equation, small times long equals big. Because your success will have less to do with how good you art at the habit, and more to do with the everyday disciplines that contribute to the sheer accumulation of experience with the habit. What force multiplier might make your transformation process accelerate faster and easier?
