Envy is the one planting the seeds

Here’s the key balance.

Allowing ourselves the joy of fantasizing about being in a successful person’s shoes, but also having the humility to keep our feet on the ground.

Because their type of success may not be right for us. Our strengths, values, and desires may suggest that a different path might be more fulfilling and sustainable.

And so, we release the pressure to be someone we’re not. We trust our own path as where we need to be.

See, that’s the thing about envy. It rarely takes into account the personal cost that comes with success. It doesn’t recognize the difference between fantasy and what is genuinely right for us.

Envy is like one of those beautiful catty women on a dating reality show. They’re not here to make friends. Envy is here to make us want things we’ll never have, and then laugh when we crumble under the pressure. Envy’s sole mission in life is getting us to ignore our own strengths and chase after someone else’s dream, only to realize we’re miserable when they get there.

In short, it’s not here for the right reasons. It’s here to keep us coveting things that aren’t meant for us, and then watch us implode.

Like it says in scriptures, the grass is only greener on the other side, because envy is the one planting the seeds. It’s the fire in the pit, the itch you can’t scratch; you can count your blessings, and he’ll count the cash.

Okay maybe that was a rap song, not a bible verse. Doesn’t matter.

Are you ignoring your own strengths and chasing after someone else’s dream, only to realize you’re miserable when you get there?
